Your Ad Here Modoc County is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of 2000, its population was 9,449. The current county seat is Alturas. History Modoc County was formed on February 17, 1874. Previous county seats include Lake City and Centerville, both of which are now ghost towns. The county's official slogans include, "The last best place", and "Where the West still lives". The Modoc people, who lived at the Klamath River headwaters, were a prominent tribe that broke away from the Klamath tribes to the north in Oregon, and the name of the county was derived from this tribe. ![]() |
